It only makes sense that a hunter would breed a better hunting dog than a non-hunter. Red Guthrie is an avid hunter and a dedicated outdoorsman.

Richard "Red" Guthrie has been breeding Texas Terriers (AKA: Red Guthrie Terriers), since 1967. Poverty Valley Kennels, in Early TX (near Brownwood), is the place they call "home".

They were originally bred as "trap-line" dogs. They would be sent into caves to check "lion sets", before the hunter would enter. The dogs were too light to set off the 25lb traps and they could alert the hunter if the cave was occupied. The hunter would then crawl into the cave to retrieve the game.

Texas Terriers are excellent blood trail dogs and they can sit quietly with a hunter in his stand. They're great for hunting rattlesnakes, hogs, rats and raccoons.

There are other "breeders" calling their dogs "Texas Terriers", but you can only get the original from Poverty Valley Kennels.
